Golf in Full Swing for the Flyers

By Colin Cooney ’28

Golf, the beloved pastime that originated in 15th century Scotland, has experienced an undeniable upswing in popularity in recent years. Why is it that golf has gained so much traction among teenage athletes? As the Chaminade High School Flyers prepare to tee up for its spring 2025 season, let’s investigate recent trends and gain perspectives from some of Chaminade’s golf enthusiasts.

There are several factors that have undoubtedly contributed to the surge in younger golfers. First of all, the restrictive pandemic lockdowns in 2020 shifted more athletes to golf since this sport could be played outdoors and adhere to social distancing rules.

In addition, accessibility has increased through the launch of indoor simulators and sports entertainment chains like TopGolf, which attract players outside of traditional country club settings.

Patrick Standard, Master Fitter from Club Champion, stated, “The pandemic definitely spurred a major increase in younger golfers. Indoor training has experienced a steady rise since 2020. Simulators enable students to practice after school a few times a week year-round.”

The growth in innovative youth programs such as the PGA Jr. League has also attracted young players by providing a supportive, social, and instructional format for all skill levels.

According to the National Golf Foundation’s 2024 report, “The total number of golfers in the United States has reached nearly 45 million, with a substantial portion of this growth attributed to younger players. The total number of junior golfers in the U.S. has increased 40 percent over the past four years, reflecting a shift toward a younger, trendier golfing demographic.”

Another factor is the prolific rise of Youtube golf channels, including Grant Horvat, GM Golf, GoodGood, the Bryan Bros, and countless others. These channels, along with other social media golf influencers, effectively target younger audiences with free advice, instructional tips, data-driven training, limited merchandise drops, and entertaining videos.

Lastly, the emergence of professional golf leagues such as LIV has stirred excitement among fans. These leagues host tournaments featuring both individual and team competitions, attracting some of the most elite names in men’s golf.

While golf has historically been regarded as an individual sport, younger players seem drawn to the camaraderie and friendships that are forged at the range and on the course. This sentiment was echoed by some Flyers who are trying out for the golf team.

Will Bailey ‘28 said, “My favorite part of golf is going out with a group of friends and playing with any combination of teams. Without the team aspect, golf could get boring and repetitive.”

Adam O’Neill ‘28 shared, “I enjoy the friendly competition and pushing myself to become better at the game. Additionally, golf has improved my focus in both school and life.”

Golf is an amazing sport, but it is also incredibly challenging and can be frustrating at times. As such, it teaches humility and encourages sportsmanship.

Gavin Macchio ‘28 said, “Even though the game is frustrating and tough, it is still super fun. It’s a great way to grow friendships, relieve stress, and have fun.”

The sport of golf cultivates mental awareness and perseverance, which serves players well for a lifetime. Most importantly, golf enables athletes of all ages to connect with friends, strive for excellence, and stay fit. The 2025 golf season is certain to be a good one for the Flyers!
