Spirit Days: More Than Just Sports

By William Ferraro-Reich ’26

On Thursday, October 6,  the freshman class put their iPads aside and left their jackets and ties in their lockers to partake in Freshman Spirit Day.  After Mass in Darby Auditorium, the ninth-graders participated in many activities, such as dodgeball, soccer, and volleyball.  This day helped bring together homerooms through teamwork and competition, serving a very important role in building relationships among the freshmen. “Spirit day helped me get along with my new classmates, ”stated freshman William Ahern, “I found out what I had in common with people I had never met before.”  The relationships freshmen forged during 3-C Week were strengthened on Spirit Day and are the foundations of friendships that will last a lifetime.

On the following day, it was the sophomores chance to play games and focus on friendships.  Much like Freshman Spirit Day, Sophomore Spirit Day began with Mass. During the homily, Fr. Peter reminded the Class of 2026 of the true purpose of Spirit Day. He spoke about how the day is meant to be fun and is a nice break from the many quizzes, homework, and tests that take place on a typical school day, but also it helps strengthen the brotherhood of classmates and our Catholic faith. “Starting spirit day at Mass with all my peers allowed us all to grow in our faith together,” stated sophomore Wyatt Keys. The brotherhood among classmates leads to the strong sense of family that Chaminade creates for its students. Keys continued, “As the day went on, I got to see what my classmates succeeded in and what they struggled in, which overall strengthened my relationship with them.”  He then said that participating in “events not academically related gives all of us a new perspective on each other, creating a stronger relationship with each of our classmates.”

As Spirit Day neared its end, the homerooms and teachers came together to compete in tug of war. Several students remarked that the tug-of-war was their favorite event as it focused not only on strength but also on teamwork, further stressing the camaraderie and brotherhood that Spirit Day embodies.
