Coach Profile: Jorge Vargas

Vargas Brings His “A-Game” as Faculty Member, Athletic Trainer, and Coach

By Will Ferraro-Reich ‘25

Chaminade High School athletics have had countless wins, championships, and successful seasons over the past few years, and Coach Jorge Vargas is the man making sure all the athletes are at the top of their game.

Vargas has been an athletic trainer and baseball coach here at Chaminade for eight years. He began his career with the Flyers via the summer athletic camps, serving as the athletic trainer.

Eventually, using his bachelor’s degree in physical education and master’s degree in athletic training, he started working with Mr. Dan Feeney and the basketball program. Vargas then advanced to full-time athletic trainer and coach at Chaminade, and in the process, became an important part of the Chaminade family.

When asked what he liked most about Flyers athletics, Vargas stated, “I like the competitive nature of the student-athletes. The stage is always high and the kids bring their A-game to every practice and game.”

Vargas’ work of constantly caring for the athletes definitely keeps them ready to bring their “A-game.” Whether you need your ankle taped for practice or you pull a muscle in a game, he is always there to help.

“I admire the work culture that the coaches create and the relationships that grow with that sense of family,” he added. Vargas helps create that culture with his work as he is constantly caring for athletes in need.

As well as being an athletic trainer, Vargas is now an assistant coach for the JV baseball team for the 2023  spring season. “I’m very excited about a different challenge,” Vargas affirmed.

Coming from his past success with the varsity team, which had three consecutive championships in the past four years (the 2020 season was canceled due to the pandemic), he is looking to continue the success with a new group of Flyers.

“I”m looking to bring some of my experience to a very talented JV team,” Vargas remarked.

Reflecting on his time at Chaminade, Vargas stated, “I love the tradition and the culture that is created from day one…The three Cs—Community, Confidence, and Commitment—are things that not only the student body can attest to, but also us as faculty.”

Vargas clearly exemplifies these qualities. He is committed to his athletes, providing care whenever they need. He helps build confidence in students by sharing his knowledge on the field as a coach. Finally, he serves the community by not only taking care of the athletes when they are hurt, but also instilling a culture of care at Chaminade.

He is an integral part of Chaminade athletics and an amazing coach who is always there to help.
