JV Basketball Update: 10-2 Flyers Finding Monumental Success

By: Nico Iacono

The Chaminade JV Basketball team, led by Coach Terrance Murchie, has gotten off to a very hot start. The JV Flyers are currently boasting a 10-2 overall record as the sophomores dominate their league. Thus far, the squad has notched key victories over some very talented teams, such as Cardinal Hayes, Stepinac, and Christ the King. This past Wednesday, the young men continued their pattern of success at the Chaminade AAC with a massive 30-point win against St. John the Baptist, thus adding a tenth tally in their win column.

Coach Murchie attributed much of his team’s success to the athletes’ ability to play as a cohesive team unit. As he put it, “It is always a complete team effort.” Coach Murchie also honed in on a few individual players that have made some especially key contributions to the team’s success so far. He highlighted the skill and dedicated work of players Kieran Ambrosi, John Buerger, Albert Knaus, and big man Deepuk Edmunds. Edmunds is able to use his height effectively in a way that makes him a very valuable contributor on the boards and in the post. These four Flyers all average upwards of 9 points per game, and are quickly emerging as upcoming superstars in Chaminade High School’s basketball program. The coach also pointed out the contributions of Gianluca Mosheni and Greg Cantwell. He commented that they are “vital parts to the teams success” because of the tough work they put in on the court.

This group has performed significantly better than it had in freshman year. The current JV team has never seen success like this before, and the results reflect that. “We are much more focused this year,” reflected Edmunds. “Last year we joked around and our focus wasn’t there. We came to play this year and are taking this season very seriously.”

This year’s JV team is clearly bringing focus, and firing on all cylinders at this point in the season. They will look to carry this momentum into the remainder of the regular season, and eventually, into the playoffs to bring a championship trophy home to Chaminade. Regardless of the team’s one-game-at-a-time mentality, there is no doubting that there are high hopes and expectations for what is to come.

The Flyers have two upcoming games in which they will look to build on their impressive record. On Friday, January 17, the Crimson and Gold will tip off against St. Mary’s High School at 5:45 in Chaminade’s AAC. Soon after, the JV team will play against Holy Cross High School at 1:45, once again at home. After the conclusion of their home stretch, they will hit the road to take on league rivals such as the Cougars of St. John the Baptist next Friday, January 24, and the Friars of St. Anthony’s next Sunday, January 26.

Congratulations to the JV team on their success, and good luck to them on their quest for a league championship!
