“There are two things that inspire me with this camp. First, how much the kids enjoy everything on the battlefield, wanting to learn, and the fact that they are so enthralled by the past—This left me in awe. Second, when we tour the battlefields, they ask great questions. These kids are extremely brilliant,” said Bro. Lawrence Syriac S.M.
For over a decade, Bro. Lawrence has been hosting the Civil War Summer Camp with increasing success. This year’s theme, “Confederate Generals,” has attracted many interested students and spots are already filling up. In association with this year’s topic, the group will be traveling down to Gettysburg to visit the battlefield and walk a mile in the shoes of the generals.

This program has provided students with a fun and educational experience for years. Frank Mattimoe ‘18 was very pleased with his experience from last year’s camp, stating, “As someone who never seriously studied the Civil War before, by taking part in the camp, I found it to be a great introduction in understanding some of the most important stages of the war. My favorite part was the field trip, as it was extremely enlightening and I couldn’t wait to learn more.”
Brother Lawrence and Mr. Michael McCarthy, the assistant moderator of the camp, look to continue a positive and educational opportunity for American History buffs. The camp is open to any boys from grades 6-10. We hope to see you there!
