The varsity football team traveled to Mitchel Field to take on Kellenberg for the CHSAA Double-A Championship game, and the Flyers prevailed with a 29-12 victory, finishing the season with a 9-2 record. The Flyers were led by quarterback Ryan Walsh ’20, Offensive MVP Donovan Wood ’20, and Defensive MVP Robert Booth ’20. The Flyers took the lead early after an electrifying 92-yard touchdown by Wood opened up the scoring, and the Flyers did not look back, taking a 9-6 lead into halftime. Running back Mario Fischetti Jr. ’21 broke out for two touchdown runs in the second half to secure the victory. The Chaminade defense was exceptional, shutting down Kellenberg’s deadly running offense. The defensive line, led by Booth and Conner Garzone ’20, blocked any chance of letting the Firebirds build confidence. Starting free safety Dylan Lomelo ’20 made a vital play when he intercepted a pass, returning it twenty yards, setting up Walsh and the Flyers for another attack. Senior standout linebacker Brandan Coward ’20 recapped the experience by saying, “It’s an unreal experience. After all the hours in practice and the weight room, we were able to put it all together when it mattered most, and I couldn’t be prouder of this group.” Congratulations to coach Kevin Dolan ’85 and the rest of the Flyers on an outstanding season.
The varsity soccer team entered the playoffs following a secure victory over arch-rival St. Anthony’s and sought its fifth-straight state championship. Unfortunately, the Flyers were not able to capture their goal and continue the streak, falling to the Friars in the first round of the playoffs 3-1. Regardless, the Flyers had a terrific season and will undoubtedly seek to rebound next season and reclaim their throne as state champions.
The varsity basketball team, under the direction of Head Coach Mr. Robert Paul ’92, will kick off its season next weekend in the Haggerty Tournament at the Activity Athletic Center, where they will square off against Campus Magnet. The Flyers are seeking to reclaim the CHSAA title after falling in a close contest to Holy Trinity last season. Go Flyers!
The varsity crew team concluded its fall season last week at the Bill Braxton Regatta, where the team placed 3rd overall. All season, the team traveled up and down the East Coast, racing in regattas held in Boston, Philadelphia, Connecticut, and Long Island. At the world-renowned Head of the Charles Regatta, where rowing programs from around the country and Europe compete on the Charles River, Chaminade’s Varsity 8 placed 27th out of 118 entries, a very impressive mark considering the stiff competition. Brian Lendino-Nieves ’20 said, “I was pleased with yet another solid season with Coach Lawrence Moebius. We were lucky enough to travel to some of the top regattas in the region, including the Head of the Housatonic, Head of the Riverfront, and Head of the Schuylkill regattas. We’re proud of the work we did this fall, but we know with a strong winter, we can build towards continuing our success from last spring and hopefully send boats to Scholastic Nationals in Ohio.” Congratulations to the crew team on another successful season!
Varsity Swimming & Diving
The varsity swimming and diving team kicked off its season with a 2-0 record, defeating Iona Prep and Kellenberg. The team has upcoming meets against Archbishop Molloy and Xaverian.
